PILSEN — As extreme weather heads this way, the Pilsen Neighbors Community Council has rescheduled Wednesday’s 25th Ward candidate forum in Pilsen.
Organizer’s alerted attendees they had postponed the candidate forum because of weather conditions Monday.
“Your safety is our priority and the committee decided it would be best to reschedule the event to next week for better and safer weather climate,” organizers wrote on Facebook.
Wednesday temperatures could reach just 12 degrees below zero during the day. The National Weather Service said it could be the coldest high temperature ever recorded in Chicago.
The forum will now take place from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7 at Benito Juarez High School, 1450-1510 W. Cermak Road.
All five 25th Ward candidates are expected to attend the forum.. Alex Acevedo, Hilario Dominguez, Aida Flores, Troy Hernandez and Byron Sigcho Lopez are vying to replace outgoing — and embattled — Ald. Danny Solis.
Meanwhile, at 7 p.m Tuesday, Feb. 5, St. Procopius Catholic Church will host a bilingual forum at the church, 1641 S. Allport St.
Late last year, Solis announced he would not be seeking re-election, leaving the race wide open.
A bombshell Sun-Times report last week revealed that Solis wore a wire for two years as part of the federal investigation into powerful Ald. Ed Burke (14th), who has been charged with attempted extortion.
This will be the first time the ward, which includes all or parts of Pilsen, Chinatown, the West Loop, the South Loop, University Village and Little Italy, will have a new alderman in more than 20 years.
The municipal election is Feb. 26. If no candidate in an aldermanic race receives a majority of votes, they’ll head to a runoff election April 2.
