THE LOOP — A man pretending to lose his phone in taxis Downtown has been stealing from drivers when they get out to help him, police said Thursday.

The thefts have happened three times since mid-December, police said.

The man hails a cab, gets inside and then tells the driver he dropped his phone under the driver’s seat and needs help getting it, according to a Chicago Police business alert.

The drivers then stopped their cars and tried to find the man’s phone, at which point he’d steal from them and run away, police said.

The thefts occurred:

  • 10:40 a.m. Dec. 13 in the 200 block of North Michigan Avenue
  • 10:30 a.m. Jan. 2 in the first block of East Wacker Drive
  • 11:50 a.m. Jan. 7 in the 200 block of West Wacker Drive

The thief was described as a 20- to 25-year-old man who was 5-foot-5 to 6 feet tall and 145-170 pounds with short, black hair, police said.

Anyone with information about the thefts was asked to call police at 312-747-8384.
