CHICAGO — A CTA bus driver made a hasty escape from his bus Tuesday night when a man began firing gunshots inside, jumping out of the driver’s side window, police said.

The driver injured himself in the fall, but avoided being shot.

It happened at 10:25 p.m. Tuesday after the driver of the 79th Street bus stopped near 79th Street and Drexel Avenue in Chatham to pick up a man. A second man got on at 79th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue, and the two passengers got into an argument, police said.

One of the men took out a gun and fired several shots, damaging a handrail, police said. The bus driver jumped through his driver’s side window to get away, hurting his neck, back and leg.

Five passengers who were on the bus were not wounded by the gunfire, police said.

The driver returned to the bus to wait for emergency help and was taken to St. Bernard Hospital, where his condition was not available but he was listed as “stable,” police said.

The gunman ran away and no one was in custody, police said.
