CHICAGO — Chicagoans looking for a way to help the city’s homeless as temperatures drop will have the chance to do so at city shelters and on the streets next week.
Chicago tea company Tiesta Tea is recruiting volunteers to hand out 1,000 “warmth kits” — filled with hot tea, food and clothing — to people facing homelessness in neighborhoods across the city including Humboldt Park and Ravenswood.
The “Spread The Warmth” giveaway, supported by Chance the Rapper’s charity SocialWorks, is set for 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17. The group will meet at Galleria Marchetti at 825 W. Erie St. in River West before traveling to shelters, soup kitchens and city streets.
“It is estimated that over 80,000 Chicagoans are homeless and struggle to survive the brutal cold every winter. It is a tragic problem, but one we can all solve,” the tea company wrote on its website.
“To help those in need, we gather one night a year to spread our warmth through our beautiful city of Chicago — sharing tea, conversation, and kindness with those who feel Chicago’s cold shoulder the most.”
