LOGAN SQUARE — How does a beer a day for a year sound?
Too much? Too little? How about for $100 for the year?
The Radler at 2375 N. Milwaukee Ave. just launched a new promotion that’s sure to delight the German beer lovers in your life.
For $100, you (or a gift recipient) can become a member of the bar/restaurant, which will get you early access to events, discounts and, perhaps most importantly, one half-liter of beer (from a selection of about five house drafts) every time you come in.
The bar is also offering premium memberships for $200 and $300, if you want more beers to choose from beyond the house draft selection. The cost can also split into monthly payments, according to the bar’s website.
Owner Adam Herbert named the membership program Stammtisch after a German tradition. In Germany, when people meet regularly at a pub to talk about the news of the day, it’s called Stammtisch.
“One of the first things I do when I get to Germany is find out where and when Stammtisch is. It’s the best way to meet locals,” Herbert said. “A lot of them are my grandparents’ age. That’s what they do on a nightly basis is they go out and meet each other. It’s a community hugely driven by groups of people that enjoy spending time with one another.”
Herbert said it was only natural that he bring Stammtisch to The Radler, which specializes in German beer, sausages and pretzels.
“We decided to create a membership program that was the essence of what we do: We’re a bar and we take care of people. Our goal is to be a community place,” Herbert said, adding, “It’s never been my intention to just slop food on a plate and pour beers, and that’s it.”
If nothing else, the membership is “a heck of a deal” if you love German beer, Herbert said.
“You really only need to do it once or twice a month to really get the value on it throughout the course of the year.”
The Radler opened in 2013. It has the look and feel of a Bavarian beer hall.
