CHICAGO — The Grinch might hate Christmas and the whole Christmas season, but Chicagoans love him.
A new report from Streaming Observer found people in Chicago are more obsessed with “How The Grinch Stole Christmas!” than any other major holiday movie, including classics like “It’s A Wonderful Life” and “Christmas Vacation.”
Throughout Illinois, though, the favored holiday movie is “Home Alone.”
No surprise there: “Home Alone,” which came out in 1990, was shot in Chicago’s suburbs (Kevin’s home still stands in Winnetka) and was written and produced by Chicago suburbanite John Hughes.
“Home Alone” was a favorite across several states, including nearby Indiana and Iowa. Nontraditional favorites for other states included “Gremlins” in Texas, “Batman Returns” in California and “Die Hard” in Wisconsin.
The Grinch was less popular outside of Chicago, with only people in Idaho being “obsessed” with it, according to the report.
The report was created by using data from Rotten Tomatoes to find the “top 50 Christmas movies” and combining that with information from Google Trends to see the search frequency for different holiday movies in each state, according to Streaming Observer.
