CHICAGO — Less than a day after a Chicago Police officer was shot and killed in a rampage at a hospital, another police officer was hit by gunfire, police said Tuesday.

At 10:57 a.m., the officer was making a traffic stop near 87th Street and Ashland Avenue when someone got out of the car he’d stopped, police said. The person tried to run away and the officer chased.

The person shot at the officer, hitting him in his chest, police said. The officer was wearing a protective vest and fired back, hitting the other person in his or her neck.

The officer was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in suburban Evergreen Park. His condition was not available but he was listed as “stable,” police said.

The other person was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious to critical condition, police said.

On Monday, Wentworth District Officer Samuel Jimenez, 28, was shot and killed while responding to a shooting at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center. The killer, Juan Lopez, 32, died during his attack at the hospital, but not before he killed two others: his ex-fiance Dr. Tamara O’Neal, 38, and pharmaceutical resident Dayna Less, 24.

This is a developing story. More details to come.
