LOGAN SQUARE — Landbirds, the new Asian chicken wing joint from first-time restaurateur Eddie Lee, has officially joined the neighborhood.
The casual eatery at 2532 N. California Ave. is now open 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Sunday hours haven’t been determined yet and will be announced in the coming days.
Right now, the only thing on the menu is Lee’s signature chicken wings topped with his secret homemade sauce. They’re served with honey butter chips sourced from Korea.
The wings come in an order of six ($11.99), an order of 12 ($19.99) and a tray (72 wings for roughly $140). Lee said the tray — ideal for football parties and the like — must be ordered ahead of time.
Dishes with tofu and other protein will likely be added to the menu once he and his cook get a handle on the wings, Lee said. That, and a sweet and savory spam-filled rice.
Lee opened the restaurant as an homage to his Albany Park upbringing.
A second-generation Korean American, Lee said he fell in love with Asian chicken wings at a young age. When he was a kid, his dad would routinely send him to get carryout at Great Sea Chinese and nearby eateries — traditional Asian restaurants that served great chicken wings, Lee said.
Landbirds is the first dine-in restaurant for Lee, though he was a partner at Fire & Water Bakery in McKinley Park, which supplied fresh baked goods to various restaurants in the city.
Lee doesn’t have any formal culinary training — he’s a consultant who just “really likes food and tends to stick with things that [he] likes,” as he describes it.
Landbirds took over the space formerly occupied by Anong Thai.
The restaurant is BYOB while Lee waits for the city to approve his liquor license. Asian teas and sodas are also available to buy.
