CHICAGO — A $75 million renovation to the Uptown Theatre will begin in the summer, according to a report.
The theater at 4816 N. Broadway will have its marquee replaced with one that looks more like its original and its capacity will be increased, according to a Tribune story detailing the restoration plans.
The theater is 93 years old and has been used as a movie theater, music venue and more, but it has been largely unused since 1981. It’s faced several failed plans for renovation over the years.
The renovation will be confirmed Tuesday when the Community Development Commission approves public financing of the project and OKs the sale of a city-owned lot at 1030 W. Lawrence Ave. to “support theater operations,” according to the Tribune.
Part of the funding for the project will come from the city: $13 million from tax increment financing, or TIFs; $14 million from property assessed clean energy financing; and $3 million from Adopt-a-Landmark Funds, according to the Tribune.
