IRVING PARK — A group of apparently drunk customers yelled racist comments at an employee of the Potbelly Sandwich Shop in Irving Park this weekend.

According to police and an employee of the sandwich shop, the confrontation happened between a group of people who appeared drunk and an employee at about 7 p.m. Sunday at the 4185 W. Irving Park Rd. location.

A store employee was taking out the trash when some apparently intoxicated people started yelling profanities and making comments about the employee’s race in an aggressive manner, the Potbelly worker said. One person in the group called a Potbelly worker “a Negro,” according to an employee.

The employee being yelled at and a customer at the store confronted the group and the store’s manager called police, the worker said. The group fled when they realized police were en route.

Police spokesperson Ronald Westbrooks confirmed there was a call reporting a battery at the store at about 7 p.m. Sunday.
