PILSEN — After being closed for several weeks, the ALDI in Pilsen is back in business with new fresh foods and a remodeled store.

The location at 1739 W. Cermak Road closed on Sept. 24 to undergo renovations to make way for more produce, meat and bakery items.

On Thursday, the store held a grand reopening and unvieled the upgrades to the Cermak location— similar to renovations completed at their Albany Park, North Center and Bucktown locations.

“Remodeling and expanding our stores gives us more room for our refreshed product selection,” David Zalunardo, Valparaiso division vice president for ALDI, said in a press release. “We know our customers want more fresh and convenient options, and by renovating our stores, we are able to provide new products as well as more of their favorites.”

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday morning, ALDI gave gift cards to the first 100 customers, and offered samples of Aldi brand products.

In 2017, the grocery store announced it would be investing $1.9 billion to remodel 1,300 stores across the country, and 130 stores in the Chicago area by the end of 2020.

“The new Aldi store look delivers on its customers’ desire for a modern and convenient shopping experience with a focus on fresh items, including more robust produce, dairy and bakery sections,” the company said.

In August, the company said it was more than halfway through the remodel investment, and planned to expand its more than 1,8000 stores across the country to 2,500 by the end of 2022.

Founded in Germany in 1946, Aldi operates more than 9,000 stores worldwide. In 1966, the company split into two separate entities: Aldi Nord, which owns Trader Joe’s, and Aldi Sud, which runs the Aldi supermarkets.

The Pilsen ALDI is now open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday.
