NORTH LAWNDALE — The North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council is set to unveil a new Quality of Life Plan aimed at shaping the future of the West Side neighborhood Thursday.
The North Lawndale community group’s new Quality of Life Plan, created in partnership with New Covenant Community Development Corporation and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation— better known as LISC Chicago — focuses on several issues including housing, workforce development, infrastructure, public safety, as well as arts and culture.
The community group will present the plan to North Lawndale neighbors during their 2018 annual meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Old St. Patrick’s Church, 625 W. Adams St. in the West Loop.
In the new plan, the group aims to unite homeowners, improve safety and transportation, address health inequalities, and improve access to high-quality education and recreational programming.
The issues laid out in the plan were narrowed down from issues identified by community members during a community forum in 2016. The overall plan received input from more than 30 organizations and aims to serve as a blueprint for shaping the future of the neighborhood.
This will be the neighborhood’s second Quality of Life Plan.
A previous plan created in 2005 targeted the area around 16th Street and Ogden Avenue. Two years ago, community leaders took the initial steps to create a more comprehensive plan that would address the development of the overall North Lawndale neighborhood.
Since 2000, LISC’s New Communities Program has helped create 24 Quality of Life Plans in different neighborhoods around the city.
