CHICAGO — A Chicago Police officer accidentally shot his gun and wounded himself Tuesday afternoon in Albany Park.
At 1:35 p.m., the officer was in the 3200 block of West Argyle Street when he accidentally fired his gun and shot himself in his leg while in his car, police said.
The officer took himself to Swedish Covenant Hospital and was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital. His condition was not available but he was listed as “stable,” police said.
“The officer was talking, alert and in good spirits” after the shooting, Anthony Guglielmi, a Chicago Police spokesman, said in a tweet.
The shooting happened as Police Supt. Eddie Johnson was answering questions from aldermen about the department’s budget at a City Council hearing. Johnson left the meeting early to visit the officer in the hospital after asking aldermen to pray for him.
The shooting was being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
