BEVERLY — Big scoop from Beverly: Rainbow Cone is not closing down for the season.
The beloved neighborhood staple at 9233 S. Western Ave. announced it will have fall and winter hours, keeping its doors open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The plan is to test out traffic through December, with the possibility of pushing straight through the winter.
Bryan Feltman, Rainbow Cone’s general manager, said an influx of traffic from fans led owners to keep the ice cream shop open.
“We’re going to give it a shot and see if it works out,” he said.
Feltman, who has worked at the shop for about a decade, said Rainbow Cone used to stay open through Christmas “probably close to 20 years ago” — but at some point decided to close up shop at the end of October and reopen the first weekend in March, with special one-day openings before Thanksgiving and Christmas so fans could stock up on rainbow cakes and quarts. It’s been that way for some time, he said.
“But in the last seven-eight years, we’ve seen traffic increase,” Feltman said of the crowds that line up looking for their rainbow-flavored fix.
Rainbow Cone, which opened in 1926, will be open from noon until 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from noon until 6 p.m. on Sunday.
The staff is not expecting to serve the same volume of customers in the winter, though — hence the weekend-only hours.
But they are “expecting a lot of our hardcore, real loyal fans that are here weekly or daily, we expect to see them all the time,” Feltman said.
At this point, the shop plans to stay open on weekends all of November and December. If all goes well, Rainbow Cone will be open through January and February, too.
“The more people support it, the more we will stay open,” Feltman said. “We hope it works out and hope we can continue.”
The new fall/winter hours coincide with the return of a Rainbow Cone treat — the cake roll. The shop is serving up a chocolate cake roll with Rainbow Cone ice cream and a seasonal pumpkin cake roll with vanilla ice cream now. Look for them to add another seasonal cake roll in December.
