CHICAGO — A man who witnessed a hit-and-run involving a bicyclist was shot dead when he attempted to pursue the driver of the vehicle, police said.

Early Tuesday, the 39-year-old man was in his car and recording a group of bicyclists he knew when he saw a car hit one of the bicyclists, a 30-year-old woman, police said. The driver of the car took off after hitting the woman.

The witness drove after the other car, catching up with it in the 600 block of East 76th Street, police said. The man and the person who’d hit the woman got into an argument.

At about 1:26 a.m., another vehicle pulled up and someone inside that car fired shots, hitting the witness twice in his neck, police said. He was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition and later pronounced dead.

The bicyclist who was hit by the car was taken to Northwestern Hospital in good condition with an injured shoulder, police said.

The gunman was in a blue SUV, police said. No one was in custody.
