CHICAGO — The controversial Lincoln Towing has been ordered to stop towing cars immediately by the Illinois Commerce Commission.
Members of the commission voted unanimously to revoke the towing agency’s Commercial Vehicle Relocators License immediately on Wednesday morning, according to a news release from the commission. This comes several months after a commission judge recommended the company get to keep its license.
The company has faced hundreds of complaints and was even the subject of a song, “Lincoln Park Pirates.” The commission was shown evidence that Lincoln Towing was behind more than 800 “unauthorized property seizures,” commission Chairman Brien Sheahan said, according to the news release.
“… Lincoln Towing Service has not conducted its business with honesty and integrity, that it is — in fact — unworthy to be entitled to hold a Commercial Vehicle Relocators License …,” Sheahan said.
Lincoln Towing will be able to fight the commission’s decision, according to the Tribune.
The Illinois Commerce Commission announced in February 2016 that it would investigate the company to determine if it would be allowed to keep its license. In July, a judge for the commission wrote that the company “is fit, willing and able to provide relocation towing service,” according to the Chicago Tribune.
Lincoln Towing faced 464 complaints over a 21-month period that ended in in October 2017, according to numbers provided to DNAinfo Chicago. Lincoln Towing said the number of complaints was “miniscule,” and officials said 38 percent of the complaints were dismissed without further investigation.
Drivers complained the company had overcharged them, improperly prepared invoices and towed cars that were parked properly, among other things.
