Police Sergeant Kills Himself On Duty In West Loop, Police Say

The 47-year-old was a supervisor for the Chicago Police Department's Mass Transit unit, authorities said.

WEST LOOP — A Chicago police sergeant was found unresponsive in his squad car Monday afternoon in West Loop, police said.

The sergeant, who was a supervisor for the Chicago Police Department’s Mass Transit unit, was found unresponsive with a self-inflicted gunshot wound at 21 N. Deplanes St. at 3:46 p.m. Monday, authorities said.

The 47-year-old was taken to Northwestern Hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced dead at 4:16 p.m., the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said.

He was identified as Steven Joseph Bechina, 47, of the 10200 block South California Avenue in Chicago, according to the medical examiner’s office. 

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi shared the “devastating news” in a tweet Monday afternoon.

“Our hearts are heavy and deepest condolences are with his family and fellow officers tonight,” Guglielomo said.
