GREEKTOWN — The three-day Taste of Greektown fest will feature a spread of authentic Greek cuisine — and a gyro eating contest — on Halsted this weekend.

The 29th annual fest, staged on Halsted Street between Monroe and Van Buren, will feature food from 10 Greektown restaurants and bars, live music and more fun. The fest runs from 4-11 p.m. Friday, noon-11 p.m. Saturday and noon-11 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is free, but attendees will be asked to give a $5 optional donation when entering. The donation benefits the Greektown Chamber of Commerce.

Participating restaurants include Ambassador Public House, Artopolis, Athena, Mr. Greek Gyros, 9 Muses Bar & Grill, Primo’s Chicago Pizza, Santorini, Spectrum Bar & Grill, WJ Noodles, Zeus Gyros.

At 6 p.m. Saturday, the third annual Gyro Eating Contest will be open to men and women 21 years of age and older. The event is sponsored by Devanco Foods.

Participation will be limited to the first eight people who sign up on site between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon near the fest’s north stage.

In addition to bragging rights, the winner will take home a $250 Visa gift card. The runner-up gets a $100 gift card.

Live Greek bands and dance troupes will be featured on two stages with performances from the Jesse White Tumblers at 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The fest features kids activities and artisan stands, too.
