CHICAGO — A police chase ended in a five-car crash on the Eisenhower Expressway late Thursday.

The incident started with a shooting: At 5:03 p.m., a 20-year-old man was standing next to a car in the 3100 block of West Arthington Street when someone got out of a car and fired shots at him, police said. The man was hit multiple times throughout his body.

The man was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Later, officers started chasing a car because they thought someone involved in the shooting was inside, police said. At 10:34 p.m., the driver of the car crashed on the Eisenhower Expressway near Racine, resulting in a five-car pileup, police said.

An officer’s ankle was injured when he placed a person into custody, and he was treated at a hospital, police said.

One person was in custody. Police did not immediately have more information.
