CHICAGO — The Alley is offering a $1,000 reward for information on a thief who broke into the store early Thursday.

The burglary happened about 5:45 a.m. Thursday at the iconic counterculture store at 3221 N. Clark St. A man broke in by “crowbarring open” doors before stealing $200 from the register and taking a hat with an Alley logo on it, said store owner Mark Thomas.

The burglar also tried to take leather coats, but they were locked onto the rack and the burglar — who Thomas described as as the “biggest idiot” — couldn’t figure out how to remove them. The burglar ended up doing more than $1,000 in damage to the store, Thomas said.

Those with information about the burglar can contact the Alley by emailing Mark@TheAlley.com.

Someone called police at 9:57 a.m. Thursday to report a burglary in the 3200 block of North Clark Street, but further information was not immediately available, police said.
