WOODLAWN — First Defense Legal Aid will host a resource fair to show residents ways to protect their constitutional rights and provide direct access to a range of related services this weekend.

The free event will be held at what’s commonly referred to as the “Healing Village,” a vacant lot in the 6200 block of S. Greenwood Ave. from noon-4 p.m. on Saturday.

Earlier this month, residents organized to call on Ald. Willie Cochran (20th) to allow the village to remain in the lot after he set an Aug. 6 eviction date for the community healing space.

“The goal is to educate people about what community and legal resources are out there to help them with any housing issues, legal issues or otherwise that they may be experiencing,” said First Defense Legal Aid staff attorney Benjamin Meyer.

Representatives from a number of community organizations including the Westside Justice Center, Metropolitan Tenant Organization and Alternatives, Inc. will be at the event, Meyer said, and offer information or referrals to attendees.

A number of police misconduct attorneys will also be available to provide free consultations.

In the case of inclement weather, the resource fair will move to Harris Park Field House, 6200 S. Drexel Ave.
