CHICAGO — A child as young as 11 was taken into custody after two teens were shot, one fatally, during a basketball tournament Thursday night, police said.
At 9:10 p.m., there was a “large fight” inside the Garfield Park field house in the first block of North Central Park Avenue, police said. Officers broke up the crowd, which was there for a basketball tournament, when someone fired shots outside.
A 15-year-old boy was shot in his chest and he was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. A 14-year-old was hit in his abdomen and he was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.
A person of interest was in custody, police said. Anthony Guglielmi, a Chicago Police spokesman, described that person as a boy between 11 and 13 years old. A gun was found, police said.
Two male teens (14 & 15 yoa) were shot tonight during a large basketball game in Garfield Park. One victim tragically died from injuries.
