DOWNTOWN — A half-dozen local animal shelters will work to find permanent homes for dogs and cats during this weekend’s “Clear the Shelters” campaign.
Clear the Shelters is an event where animal shelters across the United States host activities to find “forever homes” for animals in need. Some of Chicago’s biggest programs, like Animal Care and Control and the Anti-Cruelty Society, plan to participate this year and are even waiving fees to encourage adoptions.
Here are the Chicago shelters that are participating:
Tree House Humane Society
Details: Tree House, which adopts and fosters out cats, is waiving adoption fees for cats 3 and older for Clear the Shelters. The offer is available noon-6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday at the shelter.

Precious Pets Almost Home
Details: Precious Pets has partnered with Pet Supplies Plus for its Clear the Shelters event. Would-be owners can go to two of the stores, 3757 N. Lincoln Ave. and 3640 N. Elston Ave., to meet kittens and cats that are up for adoption, donate to the shelter, play bags and win samples and coupons from a prize wheel. The events run noon-3 p.m. at both locations.

PAWS Chicago
Details: The no-kill animal shelter is waiving adoption fees for dogs 7 months and older and cats 1 year and older during an event 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. The website has more information on PAWS’ adoption requirements.

Help Save Pets
Details: The Help Save Pets shelter is teaming up with the Old Town Animal Care Center for an adoption event. The event runs 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.

Details: The Anti-Cruelty Society is waiving adoption fees for animals 5 months and older for Clear the Shelters. The event runs 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Information about animals that will be available for adoption is available online.

Chicago Animal Care and Control
Details: The city-run Animal Care and Control is waiving adoption fees for one dog or cat (or a bonded pair) as long as they’re 6 months or older. The event runs noon-5 p.m. Saturday. Those hoping to adopt must be 18 or older and bring a photo ID and bill or lease with their address to the event. Information about animals that will be up for adoption is available online.
