WEST LOOP — A 39-year-old bicyclist died after being hit by a dump truck in Greektown Thursday morning, police said.
At 7:10 a.m., the woman was traveling north on Halsted Street when the truck made a right turn onto Madison and struck the woman in the 700 block of West Madison Street, said Officer Jennifer Bryk, a police spokesperson.
The woman was identified as Angela Park, 39, of the 3400 block of South Prairie Street, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
Park was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead shortly after the accident at 7:33 a.m., officials said.
The driver was cited for striking a pedestrian in the roadway, Officer Christine Calace said. Police did not release the name of the driver.
Late Thursday morning, a section of Madison Street was cordoned off between Halsted and the Kennedy Expy. overpass with red and yellow police tape.
The bicycle lay in the intersection, while a helmet and glasses were seen under the dump truck.
Resident Amy Askey, who has lived in a nearby building for 29 years, said she’s seen so many “dangerous close calls” at the intersection.
“It’s so sad, my heart goes out to her family,” she said.
A 44-story apartment tower is being built near the crash site at 1 S. Halsted St. next to the Crowne Plaza. Concrete construction barriers currently line the streets.
