Street Vendors Targeted In Back Of The Yards Robberies, Police Warn

The most recent robbery happened Monday in the 4800 Block of South Elizabeth Street.

A 14-year-old girl who was shot in the head Wednesday was listed in critical condition at Comer Children’s Hospital, officials said.

BACK OF THE YARDS — Police are warning residents after a series of armed robberies that targeted street vendors in Back of the Yards.

In four separate robberies, a man walked up to a street vendor and demanded property, according to a community alert issued late Monday night.

The most recent robbery happened at 11:58 a.m. Monday in the 4800 Block of South Elizabeth Street.

The other incidents happened at 5:50 p.m. June 28 in the 900 block of West 50th Street; at 3:10 p.m. July 3 in the 4800 of South Justine, and at 6:30 p.m. July 8 in the 900 block of West 50th Street.

The suspect is described as an 18-22-year-old black man, 5-foot-5-inches tall, and weighing between 130-150 pounds, according to police. The man was seen driving a purple or maroon Buick Rendezvous, police said.
