PORTAGE PARK — Portage Grounds is celebrating its 5-year anniversary with free cupcakes on Saturday.
From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday customers who stop by the coffee shop at 5501 W. Irving Park Rd. will get a free cupcake.
Robert Quezada first opened the neighborhood coffee shop across the street from Portage Park back in 2013. At the time he said there weren’t that many options for someone hanging or working out at the park to relax with a coffee and snack nearby.
“Five crazy years with so many ups and downs, but we wouldn’t trade it for the world,” said an update posted to the coffee shop’s Facebook on Thursday. “We love our community and are world class baristas who selflessly serve every day.”
Since opening, the business has gained a following from neighborhood residents despite the challenge of months-long construction project that began in 2016 to replace water mains underneath Irving Park Road.
