RIVER NORTH — A high-speed police chase in River North ended when the fleeing driver crashed into a cab, killing a 66-year-old woman, police said.

At 10:54 p.m. Wednesday, officers were in the 500 block of North State Street when they tried to stop the driver of a Jeep that had been reported stolen, police said.

The driver sped off, going down State Street and then turning onto Grand Avenue, police said. The driver went through a red light and crashed into a taxi in the first block of West Grand Avenue, police said.

A passenger in the taxi, the 66-year-old woman, was taken to Northwestern Hospital and pronounced dead. The driver of the cab, a 64-year-old man, had minor injuries and was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital in good condition.

Two people who were standing on a nearby sidewalk were hit by the cab during the crash. The two, a 48-year-old woman and 45-year-old man, each possibly broke one of their legs and were hospitalized.

Three people who were in the Jeep were taken into custody. They had not been injured in the crash.
