ROSELAND — A Roseland church is giving personal care items to neighbors this weekend ahead of the winter holidays.

The free event is 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at St. George and St. Matthias Episcopal Church, 164 E. 111th St. Organizers will give out 100 care packages filled with hats, scarves, gloves, socks, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet paper, deodorant and soap.

People also can get free, unlimited meals, part of the church’s monthly effort to feed neighbors in need.

The giveaway is being organized by Ethel Glaze, a longtime member of the church and its community feeding program.

“We try to fulfill the needs, their immediate basic needs, with these items to make it easier on them, especially now that everything is so expensive,” Glaze said. “And things were more expensive for us to acquire this year, so we asked for donations.”

St. George and St. Matthias Episcopal Church’s giveaway is held annually during the holiday season, Glaze said. Volunteers assembled the care packages on Wednesday in preparation of Saturday’s event, Glaze said.

There will be separate care packages for men, women and families, whose care packages will have more personal care items to accommodate children, Glaze said.
