DOWNTOWN — A car burst into flames on Michigan Avenue near Millennium Park Monday morning, snarling traffic, smoking out a Downtown intersection but causing no injuries.

Gus Perez’s 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser started smoking and burst into flames while he was driving south on Michigan Avenue, just before Randolph.

“I just looked up, and the smoke was there,” the 36-year-old said.

He got out of the car and watched from the sidewalk as smoke billowed down Michigan Avenue. Gawkers stopped to watch the car’s final moments. Others just passed by without much apparent concern.

Perez said he just spent $700 on power steering and alternator repairs, but was about to get rid of the car anyway.
